A quick film update,
I have arrived in Berlin after an all too short visit in Paris where I spent time with cherished colleagues and made new ones at the IFRA and SND joint visual journalism confab. It was a two day event held in the Trocadero district (Across from Eiffel tower) at the ultra-luxe Apple executive briefing center. Some video to follow - I filled three tapes over two days, SOTs (Interviews and pieces to camera), sequences in the rain (the never-ending rain!) and plenty of B-roll.

Camp Video Journalism - the week-long Web video workshop in Chicago has ended - but the films from the events are still rolling out. The video above is David Dunkley Gyimah’s promo reel cut from footage that he and I shot in Chicago during our brief time together.
Special thanks go out to Michael Cooke and the Chicago Sun-Times crew (Toby, Brian, Jeremiah and all the rest) for hosting the week of training. True champs you are.

I am so proud to be teaching video journalism to more and more print reporters. And humbled by the amazing volunteer contributions of colleagues old and new that are donating their time and expertise to the Camp Video Journalism training workshops.
Today I am preparing two lectures that I will be giving in Bucharest October 2-3 for the World Editors Forum Master Class series but last week I was joined in the Chicago Sun-Times classroom by my former Sun-Times colleague, Carol Marin and some new CampVJ instructors: Danielle Guerra, Mark Flescher and Aaron Cahan.

This video clip was captured with my point and shoot Lumix LX-2 in 16:9 of David Dunkley Gyimah explaining the differences between the way video journalism is reported from the field: The traditional broadcast model vs the video journalist shooting more like a newspaper style “Photo Joe.”
After working with David all week - my style here has clearly been influenced by fascination with the handheld “Bourne Identity” shooting technique. In this piece, David is so engaged with his audience that I decided not to cut away. What do you think? Would this have been stronger with cut away shots?
