Off to India and Egypt to train journalists in visual editing

I am packing up for a five week trip where I will be teaching and producing journalism projects in India and Egypt. I hope to be able soon to share some video, photos and reports from the sold out Newspaper Design and Redesign workshop hosted by IFRA in Hyderabad, India.

I have learned that VizEds blogger TK Sajeev (Front Page Editor for the Malayalam-language daily in Kerala Kaumudi) will be attending the seminar as well as designers and editors from newspapers in Sri Lanka and Singapore. I have never met TK Sajeev in person though he has been blogging for Visual Editors for many years. It has been great to see what participating in the Visual Editors community has done for his work and his career.

I put a lot of time into my preparation for the classroom and I try to make the sessions inclusive and love to draw the expertise already present in the room. We will have fun and make some great progress in the seminar.

So, I as I pack up my video camera, my presentations, handouts and guitar I am encouraged by a recent note from a recent participant in one of my seminars. When I get notes like this - it makes me want to do an even better job the next time I get up in front of a group of colleagues.

Hi Robb,
I attended the AAN writer’s workshop in August (At Medill) , where you spoke on some web-based programs that you thought we could use.

As I was walking back from the Mayor’s boring budget address this afternoon wondering how I was going to write about it, you popped into my head telling me about tagcrowd. I tossed the speech into the editor, got the results and immediately had a great idea for a story for our blog based on the results and it should be up later today.

Anyway. I appreciate the time you spent with us, some of it must have stuck (I also have been using delicious like a madman and it was an invaluable tool as I was writing a recent feature story over the course of several months). Anyway, Thanks again,
Charlie Deitch, News Editor, Pittsburgh City Paper

Stay tuned to the blog. The journey begins in the heart of India but the majority of my time will be spent working on projects for the Media Development Group in Egypt.
This is my fifth trip to Egypt to work with MDP and this is the most ambitious outing to date.

I will be producing a documentary in Alexandria with some local videographers and also consulting again in Cairo with newspaper editors and running a design workshop at the Press Syndlcate.

I do have some time off this time around and will spend a weekend at Sharm El-Sheikh and later on a week long expedition through the Oases of the Western desert.

Film at 11.

Medill - Teaching multimedia reporting techniques

Medill - photoblogged by Robb’s iPhone

I am at Medill teaching two multimedia reporting seminars for the AAN Writers Workshop. Here I am demonstrating how to photoblog using Flickr and an iPhone in real time.

I passed around my cameras and recorders and favorite Web sites for producing Web graphics reports and fielded some great feedback from the participants. It is so much fun to turn the classroom into a big conversation and live demonstration. I really enjoy having to think fast and take the lead from the delegates questions.

So many great enquiries that will make it into a future post as I teach more seminars about multimedia reporting. It’s been a popular topic this year as I have taught it from Vancouver to Berlin.

It is never the same seminar twice because of the way that the lecture simulates the networked social media experience. The students decide the specific focus based on where they are in the game and what they are eager to know first. Some of it is disorienting to the self-proclaimed “luddites” - so I spend a lot of time going back through the techniques to bring it home.

Who knew it could be so much fun to demonstrate delicious but it is a great tool to help the audience members take notes and see firsthand the power of tagging, RSS and metadata and how at the end of the day, reporting fundamentals still matter.
