Magazine design at Cairo University

Today I taught a magazine design at Cairo University, Faculty of Mass Communication and in the afternoon returned to finish the last day of my four day design workshop at the Supreme Press Council.

It’s been an adventurous 30 days in Egypt training student and professional journalists under the Media Development Program.

Below are some photo slideshows from my video and design classes conducted in Alexandria and Cairo.

Off to India and Egypt to train journalists in visual editing

I am packing up for a five week trip where I will be teaching and producing journalism projects in India and Egypt. I hope to be able soon to share some video, photos and reports from the sold out Newspaper Design and Redesign workshop hosted by IFRA in Hyderabad, India.

I have learned that VizEds blogger TK Sajeev (Front Page Editor for the Malayalam-language daily in Kerala Kaumudi) will be attending the seminar as well as designers and editors from newspapers in Sri Lanka and Singapore. I have never met TK Sajeev in person though he has been blogging for Visual Editors for many years. It has been great to see what participating in the Visual Editors community has done for his work and his career.

I put a lot of time into my preparation for the classroom and I try to make the sessions inclusive and love to draw the expertise already present in the room. We will have fun and make some great progress in the seminar.

So, I as I pack up my video camera, my presentations, handouts and guitar I am encouraged by a recent note from a recent participant in one of my seminars. When I get notes like this - it makes me want to do an even better job the next time I get up in front of a group of colleagues.

Hi Robb,
I attended the AAN writer’s workshop in August (At Medill) , where you spoke on some web-based programs that you thought we could use.

As I was walking back from the Mayor’s boring budget address this afternoon wondering how I was going to write about it, you popped into my head telling me about tagcrowd. I tossed the speech into the editor, got the results and immediately had a great idea for a story for our blog based on the results and it should be up later today.

Anyway. I appreciate the time you spent with us, some of it must have stuck (I also have been using delicious like a madman and it was an invaluable tool as I was writing a recent feature story over the course of several months). Anyway, Thanks again,
Charlie Deitch, News Editor, Pittsburgh City Paper

Stay tuned to the blog. The journey begins in the heart of India but the majority of my time will be spent working on projects for the Media Development Group in Egypt.
This is my fifth trip to Egypt to work with MDP and this is the most ambitious outing to date.

I will be producing a documentary in Alexandria with some local videographers and also consulting again in Cairo with newspaper editors and running a design workshop at the Press Syndlcate.

I do have some time off this time around and will spend a weekend at Sharm El-Sheikh and later on a week long expedition through the Oases of the Western desert.

Film at 11.

See the redesign of Tribune's SunSentinel

Charles Apple has done it again.

Charles again has the scoop on a big newspaper redesign. This time it is a much clearer image of the new design for the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida. (he blogged ‘spy photos‘ of the new design in his August 1 blog item.)

TABLOID, TABLOID, TABLOID
This is a very tabloid front page. Yeah, I went there.
Having worked as an editor on designs for the Sun-Times, Red Streak (and even the Sun-Sentinel’s launch of XS (now called City Link) I, of course, don’t mean that the SS went tabloid in a negative way at all.

“Tabloid” can be up a design strategy for up market, and mid market too, of course. (I redesigned The Examiner as a more up market read . . . and years ago I redesigned Sun Publications as an up market suburban read . . so I know a little bit about this.)
Broadsheet preserves the sectioning at the expense of a true magazine page turning experience. Still smartly editing your pages like a magazine editor does can only help in attracting and guiding readers through a daily newspaper.

BACK TO FLORIDA
This bold design does what every well-edited tab front page should. Use toppers well, provide a decisive, clear snapshot of a day and dare you to turn inside to find more interesting items.

THE CAVEAT
This type of page is driven by the culture, conversations and characters involved in the news meetings. I would like to know more about how the editor-in-chief, Earl Maucker, led a culture change for news planning and coverage - and in particular, Page One.

You can’t produce this type of front the way most broadsheet editors decide A1 items in news meetings.

The editor of this paper will have to implement a new strategy to back up the design if he truly plans on pulling this off every day.

I will now return to watching Apple’s blog for more details about this and the other Tribune redesigns.
