Magnet School teachers, students using Final Cut in Kalamazoo

There is a place where fourth graders will be using Final Cut and every teacher has a multimedia hub as their “desk.” At this urban school, classroom teachers will be filming video documentaries as part of their jobs.

Welcome to Edison Elementary School in Kalamazoo, Michigan: A magnet school with new multimedia production facilities. I recently led a video journalism workshop with a core group of classroom teachers where I taught them how to make effective video reports. (Teachers call training “professional development”)

One of my Camp Video Journalism Orlando students, Anthony Gettig, produced this short video report from that week. Listen to the teachers - see the excitement on their faces.

Multimedia reporting tools at America East in Hershey

Just added a new seminar for Pennsylvania newspaper editors.

“Breaking the Entry Barriers to Online – A Tool Kit” to the schedule. Please join me on Monday, April 6 from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at the America East convention in Hershey, PA. for this session.

Last year I worked with Time.com’s Craig Duff to deliver a series of video workshops at America East. America East is a huge newspaper exhibition and conference and attracts top speakers and delegates from all over the country.

I can’t wait to get back to Hershey and work with Pennsylvania editors again. This is the first trip of many that I will be making to the state in 2009. I will be producing at least four more training events in Harrisburg and visiting up to a dozen newspapers this year for private consults and coaching for their multimedia initiatives. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!

Multimedia training in Europe - Learn Web video in Berlin

Multimedia training at KircherBurkardt in Belrin.
Great news! For the March 17-19 video journalism training, Visual Editors has a great host in KircherBurkhardt. KircherBurkhardt is the famous German editorial design firm and is donating training space and facilities.

I did a few days of private multimedia training with KB staff last year and my friend, Lukas Kircher has opened up his shop to allow this event to take place for anyone who wants to learn how to tell Web video stories better. Walking into KB is like entering Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. It is Germany’s largest information graphics operation and it is an amazing place to come practice multimedia.

All proceeds benefit the Visual Editors charity.

Come to Berlin to learn:
– Fundamentals of camera usage
– Shooting and editing sequences
– How to gather audio
– Elements of visual stories
– Writing scripts, recording voice overs and editing scenes
– Final Cut shortcuts and workflows
– Compressing, uploading and filing videos for Web
