CMYK at Al-Haram in Cairo, Egypt

CMYK at Al-Haram in Cairo, Egypt

The tiles in the floor of the pre-press room at Al-Haram newspaper offices in Cairo, Egypt.

I spent four hours last night documenting and filming at the offices of Al-Haram shadowing the deputy editor as he closes the paper and edits the front page between editions with his night crew. I left at 1 a.m., the editor in charge left two hours later.

I have shot video clips to also let you see what it is like to work on the front page at Egypt’s largest-circulation paid daily newspaper. So stay tuned . . . I am flying back to Chicago in a few hours and it may take a week or so to recalibrate my senses.
I have been living many time zones ahead of normal since 31 January.

Here are some other street scene images I documented today while traveling between Cairo University and the Al-Akbar newspaper offices for on-site consultation visits.

November 2007 newsletter

Come to Kolding, Denmark!
Presenting “Web video is not Television!” at the Danish Newspaper Association February 4-5, 2008.

Ah, the correctible journalist. As soon as I clear the e-mail queue with the latest newsletter . . . I get a couple of ‘Tweets’ and e-mails from friends. Apologies for two typos that got past me and my editor. Europe is still in Europe and, yes I know how to “redesign.” Below is the corrected newsletter.

» Get the most from your training budget
» Headed to Europe in February

Are you interested in making the most of your newsroom budget to deliver much-needed digital media training and expertise? Did you know that it usually costs less to have private training delivered in your newsroom than it takes to send a couple of people to an out-of-state conference for three days?

Arrange a training day for your newsroom.

2008: Denmark, the UK, Europe and the Middle East in the first quarter
For 2008, I have been invited to deliver training every quarter in the Middle East and Europe. You can take advantage of cost-sharing on travel plans to have me train in your newsroom or classroom. Contact me soon about my schedule and costs.

I can help your staff learn how to produce daily Web video, multimedia blogs and interactive online communities.

The training challenge for newspapers

“We are looking for inspiration and some advice for our first steps into the world of producing web video. We offer video on our site but we would like to learn producing more in house, but hesitate due to the costs and due to lack of knowledge.”

This quote from a Swedish client illustrates the honest desire of many newsroom executives who are asking for some help with mastering and integrating new tools and techniques.

Robb delivers
Already this year I have produced new media projects and digital journalism workshops in Egypt, Dubai, South Africa, Malaysia, Sweden, Canada, Latvia, and Poland. I have made many new friends and am extremely fortunate to have been invited to exchange ideas with peers in so many different lands.

In the U.S., I was hired to produce a rapid prototype Business section redesign with editors at The Mercury News and last month I led one day workshops on Web video and Building Online Communities with Pennsylvania Newspaper journalists.

Spring 2008 - see you in Europe!
I will be delivering “Web video is not Television!” at the Danish Newspaper Association February 4-5 and I have been invited to train at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, U.K. also in the first quarter.

I hope to see you soon at one of these training venues - please contact me if you would like to talk about booking training visits to your group. More clients are asking for quarterly visits to keep their staff up-to-date and the innovation flowing.

Best wishes in the holiday season, and please stay in touch with me about your projects and new media goals.
