CMYK at Al-Haram in Cairo, Egypt

The tiles in the floor of the pre-press room at Al-Haram newspaper offices in Cairo, Egypt.

I spent four hours last night documenting and filming at the offices of Al-Haram shadowing the deputy editor as he closes the paper and edits the front page between editions with his night crew. I left at 1 a.m., the editor in charge left two hours later.

I have shot video clips to also let you see what it is like to work on the front page at Egypt’s largest-circulation paid daily newspaper. So stay tuned . . . I am flying back to Chicago in a few hours and it may take a week or so to recalibrate my senses.

I am in egypt this week teaching a series of newspaper design workshops at the beginning and advanced levels. This video and photo slideshow shows students from the first day designing, presenting and critiquing prototype newspapers they created as part of the rapid-prototyping section of the training.

Robb Montgomery will be working again with Egyptian partners of the Media Development Project (A USAID-funded group) Robb’s fifth and longest trip to Egypt will consist of many training events and private consultations where he will share knowledge and expertise about newspaper design, visual journalism and multimedia reporting.

The exact schedule is still in development but days are already sold out for redesign workshops at the Press Syndicate.
