Author, Mobile journalism

Robb Montgomery is a Berlin-based mobile journalism educator, author, and filmmaker known for his contributions to mobile journalism and digital storytelling.

He founded the Smart Film School in 2015 and has trained over 100,000 creators, including broadcast journalists at CNN, Reuters, and The New York Times. 

His textbooks, “Smartphone Video Storytelling” and “Mobile Journalism,” are global standards used in media schools worldwide. Montgomery’s documentary films have won top prizes at festivals in Hollywood, Moscow, and Berlin. 

His teaching has revolutionized journalism education and reporting in more than 40 countries, demonstrating that powerful non-fiction storytelling is possible with mobile technology.

He founded the Smart Film School in 2014 as an online academy offering certificate courses and campus licenses for schools.

He was named the Ashoka Storyteller in Residence for 2015.

He holds a b.a. in Journalism (1990 – Eastern Illinois University) and is a masters student at Media University studying Visual Media Anthropology. His research is published in the Journal of Visual and Media Anthropology, Vol. 9, 2025, ISSN 2366-4975
