Below is a slideshow of great pages that proves the visual journalism is not dead.
Not dead by a mile - and work like this is even more necessary when editors need to tell complex stories in an economy of newsprint. Stories that can be scanned and read in non-linear fashion.
The quality of work submitted to the Visual Editors portfolio site every day illustrates that the craft and need for editorial visuals is still being produced at a high level in newsrooms around the globe.
Every few days the editors highlight the strongest page designs and graphics to be featured on the home page.
I didn’t realize anyone was saying that visual journalism “was” dead.
There are many headlines, comments, and opinions, that claim that journalism or photojournalism is dead. What a crock! Certainly, traditional forms maybe dying but they are being replaced by new ways to report, using words, pictures, and sound.
Enough with the “journalism is dead” drama - let’s focus on the next evolution.
I don’t think the question was whether it was dead. Or still being done well.
Sadly, I think the question was, when push came to shove with the economics, was it valued?
It never died. And it’s being practiced in many places to great effect every day.
The question, I think, was this: When economic push came to shove recently, was visual journalism VALUED?
Isn’t there a little paper out there in Atlanta that has no graphic artists any more?
I agree. Not dead, but not valued either.
