The Hudson plane photo proves Twitter is not a toy

Janis Krums used Twitter and his iPhone to TwitPic this amazing image in real time from the scene of the evacuation.

For those of you who missed it. And how could you? Charles Apple has a fully-illustrated blog post that shows how newspapers used this image in the front page today.

This is the newsphoto of the week and it was taken on an iPhone and distributed via Twitter.

Still think Twitter is a toy? I am embedding this 90-minute podcast from Columbia School of Journalism that features four top speakers on the subject of using Twitter in journalism.

  • Arik Hesseldahl, BusinessWeek senior technology writer - and an alum and adjunct prof at the J-school - (@ahess247)
  • Shel Israel, author of the forthcoming “Twitterville: Getting Closer to Customers During Tough Times” (@shelisrael)
  • Andrew Lih, former J-school new media professor and author, “The Wikipedia Revolution: How a Bunch of Nobodies Created the World’s Greatest Encyclopedia” - calling from Beijing (@fuzheado)

The talk is titled: Twitter for Journalists, or everything you ever wanted to know about Twitter, but were afraid to ask.

The popular micro-blogging service is used by many journalists. The service has helped in covering the Mumbai attacks; provided a way to communicate during an LA earthquake, and even helped free an American student from an Egyptian jail.

If it still isn’t clear what Twitter is . . . let’s review the video . . .
