CMYK at Al-Haram in Cairo, Egypt

CMYK at Al-Haram in Cairo, Egypt

The tiles in the floor of the pre-press room at Al-Haram newspaper offices in Cairo, Egypt.

I spent four hours last night documenting and filming at the offices of Al-Haram shadowing the deputy editor as he closes the paper and edits the front page between editions with his night crew. I left at 1 a.m., the editor in charge left two hours later.

I have shot video clips to also let you see what it is like to work on the front page at Egypt’s largest-circulation paid daily newspaper. So stay tuned . . . I am flying back to Chicago in a few hours and it may take a week or so to recalibrate my senses.
I have been living many time zones ahead of normal since 31 January.

Here are some other street scene images I documented today while traveling between Cairo University and the Al-Akbar newspaper offices for on-site consultation visits.

McPaper in Germany

McPaper in Germany

McPaper is a bookstore chain in Germany. I am in Cairo, Egypt preparing for a week of work with my clients and was cleaning out the photos from my iPhone. This was shot a couple days ago in Potsdam, Germany where the journalists I talked to had never heard that “McPaper” was the snooty term some journalists use to label USA Today - the largest circulation paper in the U.S.

Visual Journalism: The Alternative to Narrative
Visual Journalism: The Alternative to Narrative
In this session, editors will learn presentation methods beyond the straight narrative. You’ll discover alternate story forms and more visual approaches to make information easy for readers to comprehend. You’ll also see techniques that embrace more Web-centric, community-driven presentations. Understanding different story forms will help you to assign stories to writers in more meaningful ways. The session will use attendee’s publications as visual aids. After you register for the conference, we’ll tell you how to submit your publication.

I will be giving this lecture on July 17, from 3-4 p.m. at the ASBPE National Editorial Conference in Washington, D.C.

The National Editorial Conference for print publications is scheduled for July 15–17, 2009, at the Marriott Washington in Washington, D.C. The Print Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet will take place during that conference.
