Two new design jobs at The New York Times

OK you print designers wanting to walk over to the digital side of design.
Reading job listings is the best roadmap and the New York Times jobs listings are a great place to start reading up.

This is the skill set for online design jobs in their shop

Two new jobs popped up from nytimes.com on the uber journalism jobs board I have coded-up on Visual Editors.

Design Technologist and Online News Designer.

I read these and think that, perhaps, there’s too much emphasis on Flash - (Esp. after hearing The Guardian’s Mark Porter talk about how they are no longer doing big Flash container stuff any more- but rather framework-driven design.)

Ok, I digress.

Here’s the skinny:

I don’t know that Flash skill per se is what is key here. I think the way Flash blends logical coding structure and a design interface makes it a good litmus test.

Even if Flash is on the way out — web 2.0 still calls for a lot of interactive stuff… and PHP, AJAX, JSP, etc all use logical structures with syntax that has a lot in common with action script.

So, you might be right about the description over emphasizing Flash — but I think the NYT might be in the right to be looking for tech side guys that have familiarity with how to implement dynamic, code-driven design.

Right on, Danny. My motto is: “Flash isn’t the future, frameworks are.” You state the underpinning of that view nicely. Thanks! I personally have found that I am able to do more engaging storytelling and visual editing with PHP, CSS and HTML in a LAMP environment than I ever could accomplish by throwing everything into a Flash container.
