GIZA - I gave three lectures to journalism students today at Cairo University. There was a lot of Q&A and we ran way over on time, but it was worth it to get a positive reaction from faculty and students to the challenges of moving from layout-based design to learning active visual editing techniques. The J-department chair awarded me a special medal after our spirited discussion period and gave me a personal backstage tour of their design computer labs, TV studio and radio studio.
The silver medal reads “University of Cairo” “Mass Comm Department” The department has its own logo and the description below reads “with much appreciation and respect” which is actually a very high honor according to my hosts. So that was a nice surprise.
I could tell that the students were really ready for the talks that focused on “Visual Editing” (Discovering your Inner tabloid) “Publishing 2.0″ (The demands of digital media) and “12 great blog ideas” (How news orgs are using advanced blogs to reconnect with users)
Starting tomorrow, I will lead a two day Visual Editing workshop that will be held at the Supreme Press Council.
